TL;DR

  • Darius is a fighter/tank, top laner champion from the Noxus region.
  • He was an orphan with his younger brother Draven, before rising through the ranks of the Noxian army.
  • He became the Hand of Noxus, a title given to him by the Emperor, and was known for leading many battles.
  • After the Emperor’s death in a coup, Darius became a part of the new, ruling council of Noxus.

Although he is champion number 98, it feels like Darius has been in League of Legends forever, being released all the way back in May 2012. Darius, alongside Garen, has long since represented the ‘big, tough guy with an even bigger weapon’ archetype suited for top lane, but there’s more to him than meets the eye.

Now representing the Noxus region in both League of Legends and 2XKO, it’s fair to say that Darius is one of the first champions people think of when this region is mentioned. With Noxus looking like the area chosen for Arcane’s successor series, let’s take a closer look at one of the region’s key characters, based on the current League of Legends Darius iteration.

Who is Darius in League of Legends?

Darius is a champion from Noxus, known as the Hand of Noxus and the region’s symbol of might, being its most feared, battle-hardened commander. For a martial region known for valuing strength above all, Darius, being Noxus’ symbol of might, says a lot about how dangerous he is and the reputation he has.

He is more than just Noxus’s attack dog, showing throughout his history that he had to struggle and make tough choices to get where he is now, being the leader of the Trifarian Legion. It should be noted that the Darius League of Legends currently has may be altered (lore-wise) with a potential series based on Noxus, more than likely.

League of Legends Darius lore explained

According to the Darius biography, his beginnings were humble. He and his brother were orphans in the port city of Basilich, and Darius spent his childhood providing for both, fighting anyone who threatened his little brother, from gangs of other urchins to the city guard. When the Noxian Empire conquered Basilich, the victorious commander, Cyrus, saw that the brothers would make mighty soldiers, and gave them a home in his warhost, where they spent many years.

Darius would thrive here, especially because anyone, no matter their roots, could rise in the ranks of the Noxian empire. After executing a Noxus general who had ordered a retreat, Darius gained renown for rallying the troops and winning an unexpected battle, which led to his reputation growing and earning him his own command.

After a hard-fought victory against the cloud-fortresses of the Varju, Darius would be named the Hand of Noxus by the Emperor, Boram Darkwill, and sent north to conquer Freljord. The campaign was a painful one, and when Darius returned to consolidate his army, he found the Emperor slain in a coup by Jericho Swain, supported by his brother, Draven.

Despite being the Hand of Noxus, Darius found himself won over by Swain’s vision in which Noxus became ruled by a council of three, representing Vision, Might, and Guile. Darius gladly took his position on the council, leading the Noxian armies in their future conquests.

Darius’s in-game abilities

As mentioned earlier, Darius LoL players are best suited for top lane, with his role being a fighter/tank. He is known for his incredible duelling potential and LeBron James-level dunking ability. League of Legends has done well to make an axe-wielding tank mechanically fun, and there’s a reason why Darius has been a staple for 13 years.

Ability Key In-game description
Hemorrhage (Passive, No Key) Darius’s attacks and damaging abilities cause enemies to bleed for physical damage over five seconds, stacking up to five times. Darius enrages and gains massive Attack Damage when his target reaches max stacks.
Decimate Q Darius winds up and swings his axe in a wide circle. Enemies struck by the blade take more damage than those struck by the handle. Darius heals based on enemy champions and large monsters hit by the blade.
Crippling Strike W Darius’s next attack strikes an enemy’s crucial artery. As they bleed out, their Move Speed is slowed.
Apprehend E Darius hones his axe, passively causing his physical damage to ignore a percentage of his target’s Armor. When activated, Darius sweeps up his enemies with his axe’s hook and pulls them to him.
Noxian Guillotine R Darius leaps to an enemy champion and strikes a lethal blow, dealing true damage. This damage is increased for each stack of Hemorrhage on the target. If Noxian Guillotine is a killing blow, its cooldown is refreshed for a brief duration.

Conclusion

With Darius’ inclusion as one of the 2XKO champions, it seems that even Riot Games sees him as the face of Noxus. He is also one of the main faces seen in the Welcome to Noxus cinematic trailer, and from a story perspective, we could see more of him if a Noxian series in the style of Arcane is on its way. This could also mean that the current LoL Darius iteration is subject to change, depending on the direction a potential series takes.

There is more to Darius than just being the armoured brute who conquers nations. He is a loving brother, a proud Noxian, and a man who acts because he believes, wholeheartedly, in what he is doing. His track record also implies that he is a tactically mighty commander whom all should fear.
