League of Legends has kicked off Season 1 of 2026 with a new Developer Update, discussing significant gameplay changes and seasonal content.
In addition to its updates for Season 1 and the rest of 2026, Riot Games has also begun working on a large-scale game overhaul for 2027.
The first season of League of Legends 2026 officially kicks off today, and will feature a range of thematic updates centred around the military kingdom of Demacia. A Demacia theme was already teased in the game’s 2026 Season 1 cinematic, titled ‘Salvation’, which was released yesterday.
Major Gameplay Updates
Starting with Patch 26.01 today, various gameplay systems will be rolled that aim to make strategies, like splitting and sieging, viable. The update also noted that it plans to balance role agency, reduce objective fatigue, and get players into the action quikcer.

As discussed in a previous Developer Update, Ranked, Norms and Swiftplay have been given a faster Champ Select process as well as earlier first minion wave and jungle monster spawn times. All details regarding these game mode-specific changes can be found in the respective ‘A Swifter Swiftplay’ and ‘Ranked 2026’ developer blogs.
In a similar vein, previously outlined map features, such as Faelights and Crystalline Overgrowth, have now been implemented.
However, Riot Games’ latest Dev Update also dives into the brand-new Act 1 features, including an update to role quests. Depending on a player’s role, these quests vary and award different completion rewards. For instance, mid laners can earn free tier-three boots and a faster recall, while bot laners may gain access to increased gold accumulation and a seventh item slot.
In addition, the ARAM: Mayhem game mode will stay longer and receive a larger update in Patch 26.03.
Long-term Plans
For 2027, Riot Games has begun working on more significant changes to League of Legends, including a new game client, a revamped Summoner’s Rift map and changes to runes. More details regarding these major updates will be shared between MSI and the World Championship this year.
Demacia Content & Shyvana Update

In line with the Season 1 Demacia theme, Summoner’s Rift has received updated visuals. Moreover, Demacia Rising, a new meta-game, will be released alongside the start of the season, allowing players to experience the rise of the kingdom of Demacia.
In Act 2 of the season, the long-awaited Shyvana update will release, providing all-new visuals to the champion’s base human and dragon form. Minor adjustments to Shyvana’s kit will be unveiled upon her release in Act 2.
This season will also feature several new champion skins, both within and outside the Demacia theme:
| Champion/s | Skin Theme | Release Date |
| Briar & Samira | Battle Academia | Patch 26.02 |
| Galio & Ornn | Mecha-anime inspired | Patch 26.02 |
| Morgana | Prestige Veiled Lady | Season start |
| Sona & Mordekaiser | Prestige | Later in the season |
| Viego | Revenant Reign Exalted skin | Season 1 |
| Braum | Victorious skin | Season 1 |
Furthermore, Riot Games has teased a new Firecracker skin line, new April Fools’ standalone skins, and a new set of skins for Act 2 depicting the ‘dark side of Demacia’. Moreover, a new skin thematic set to debut during First Stand, the first global event of the year, will be launched.
Improving Player Behaviour
In the latest Dev Update, Riot Games announced a handful of adjustments to manage player behaviour, including lobby hostage intervention.
This new system will terminate lobbies suspected of featuring a bad actor who threatens to ruin the game experience for other players. Lobby hostage intervention will be implemented slowly across regions later this season.
Moreover, Riot Games plans to remove the ability to ban an ally’s hovered champion during Champ Select, and the autofill status will now persist through dodging.
