League of Legends: Gwen lore, explained

Gwen is a top lane hero in League of Legends who is often considered S+ tier, with a 51.39% win rate and a relatively high ban rate of 14.6%. She is an interesting character due to her unusual background: she started life as a doll created by a child seamstress named Isolde. 

In this article, we’re going to dive deeper into the Gwen lore in League of Legends, including how she transformed from a humble doll into a champion in the world of Runeterra. As well as Gwen’s LoL lore, we’re also going to take a look at her abilities and how they tie to her narrative. 

Gwen is a doll who magically came to life in her League of Legends narrative. As mentioned, she was created by a child named Isolde and resided with her in a kingdom called Camavor. Gwen was created with a great deal of care. She remembers her life as a doll with joy, as she and Isolde often played together. When Isolde passed away, Gwen became dormant, but many centuries later, she woke up on a faraway beach as a human. Wielding the scissors and tools used to create her, Gwen is determined to bring light back to a world that has been ravaged by the Ruination and honour Isolde’s memory in the process. 

As noted, Gwen’s League of Legends lore begins when she is created by the seamstress Isolde. The two are very happy together, and Gwen has fond memories of their time playing and enjoying life. However, Gwen and Isolde’s lives eventually fall into darkness, but Gwen struggles with the memories and details. All she initially remembers is that things began to deteriorate when an unnamed man entered their life. This man was Viego, another LoL champion whose lore is strongly connected to Gwen. 

Viego was a king who fell in love with Isolde. The two married, but Viego was obsessed with Isolde, so much so that his kingdom faced neglect. A failed assassination attempt on Viego led to Isolde’s death, as she was grazed by the poisoned blade meant for him. In an attempt to resurrect Isolde, Viego accidentally unleashes the Ruination, a magical disaster that created the Black Mist, a corruptive force that traps spirits and turns the living into wraith-like monsters. 

By the time Gwen woke up, centuries later, the Ruination had transformed the Blessed Isles, turning them into the Shadow Isles. A piece of Isolde’s shattered soul found Gwen when she was still a doll, bringing her to life and turning her human. On the coast where she woke up, Gwen found Isolde’s tools that were used to create Gwen. These tools were scissors, needles, and thread. When Gwen picked up the tools, she ignited a power within her called The Hallowed Mist, a restorative and protective version of the draining, corruptive Black Mist. 

Gwen’s memories of Viego return to her, and she becomes determined to put a stop to his reign of terror and help end the spread of darkness once and for all. She keeps Isolde close with her tools, fighting against corruption and darkness while trying to bring back happiness to those who have lost hope. Her connection to Isolde is what brought her to life, and that connection continues to make her fight for good and joy in a world full of suffering. 

As well as being a top laner hero, Gwen’s lore in LoL is strongly linked to her abilities. Her skills revolve around Isolde’s tools, which Gwen wields for her primary attacks. She also uses her special Hallowed Mist magic.
