A rule change that would have permitted student-athletes and athletics department employees to lawfully wager on professional sports has been overturned by Division I schools throughout the NCAA.
Just weeks before the proposal was scheduled to go into effect, more than two-thirds of the Division I member institutions supported rescinding it during a procedural 30-day review period.
The original rule, which was approved in October 2025, sought to update betting laws while upholding the prohibition against placing bets on NCAA-sponsored championship sports.
This rescission means that athletes and staff at every NCAA division will still be subject to the long-standing ban on all types of sports betting, including professional leagues.
Athletes and department employees are still prohibited from engaging in any kind of sports wagering due to the unsuccessful attempt to amend previous regulations that prohibited student-athletes from placing bets on collegiate athletics.
Integrity Concerns Spur NCAA Reversal
The decision was made in the midst of recent gambling-related scandals in both professional and collegiate sports, as well as growing worries about the integrity of sports betting.
Stressing the significance of maintaining the integrity of collegiate athletics, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and other college sports officials cited game-fixing scandals and federal charges against NBA players as reasons for the reversal.
According to the NCAA’s official release, “Because sports betting rules are common legislation, the ban on all forms of betting — for sports in which the NCAA sponsors a championship — will remain in place for all three NCAA divisions”.
Any plans to relax betting regulations for staff and student-athletes are put on hold by the vote, which has an impact on Division I, II, and III.
As in the case of Temple University basketball programme infractions, student-athletes who break these rules have recently faced severe consequences, such as permanent ineligibility and bans from participating in sports.
Now that the proposal has been withdrawn, the NCAA continues to enforce a uniform ban on sports betting.
