How to roam in MLBB – A complete guide

TL;DR

  • Almost any hero in MLBB can roam if played correctly, but the most popular ones are support and tanks.
  • A good roamer doesn’t babysit the gold laner. Instead, they roam around the map, aiding each lane.
  • Depending on the roamer, players either play aggressively or stay behind teammates and provide support.
  • Pick a healer if your exp lane or jungle is sturdy. Otherwise, a good tank will help rank faster.

With the recent changes to the MLBB ranking system, roamers are at a significant advantage. While the role is not as glamorous as jungling or gold lanes, it’s by far the most important one. Learn how to roam in MLBB, and nothing will stop you from climbing the ranks fast thanks to extra Star protection. Roamers get additional Star protection points, even if they lose a game.

As a result, their earned ranked stars remain intact, allowing them to retain ranks for longer. A good roam provides support to each lane, not just the gold lane marksman. From leashing jungle monsters to tanking Lord’s damage, there’s a lot for a roamer to do in a typical ranked match. Here’s how to play Roam in MLBB and become unstoppable.

Early game

Pick the right roam — not for you, but for the team. If the team has a squishy jungler/assassin or a fragile exp laner, you should naturally pick a tanky roam in MLBB. I recommend Hylos, Franco, or Edith; all are easy to pick and provide the team with strong frontlines. If the exp is going tank, your best bet is to get a good healer. Floryn, Estes, and Rafaela are natural picks and easy to do well with.

Purchase roam boots as soon as the match starts. The roam boots will kick in passive gold and exp gain for your character. So even when you are in a lane helping teammates clear minions, you won’t share their gold or exp, letting them farm and level up faster. There are four roam boot blessings in the game:

  • Conceal – Makes you and allies invisible for a short time, incredible for ganking or quick escapes.
  • Encourage – Passively increases the magic, physical attack, and speed of nearby allies, making it great for racking up those assists in MLBB rank games
  • Favour – Increase healing or shielding power, gives extra HP to the ally with the lowest health — a blessing for healers.
  • Dire Hit – Do more damage to enemy heroes below 35% health, excellent for roaming assassins.

Early-game roaming

Go with the jungler and tank some damage for them. Help them clear their first buff camp and move to mid. Help the mid laner clear their first wave of minions and then move to the gold lane. Stay there for a bit to heal the marksman or poke enemies, depending on what character you picked.

Mid game

The mid-game is all about giving your team map vision. If you’re a tanky hero, checking bushes is one of your duties. As you have a lot of health, you can face-check bushes for any ambushers. If you’re a healer, you’ll at least have one spell that can effectively bush check. I like Diggie as a support because he’s fantastic at providing vision with his clock bombs.

Help the jungler take down the Turtle as soon as it spawns. If you’re confident, you can also invade the enemy jungle with your jungler and either kill or disrupt the enemy jungler. Make sure you help the jungle gank lanes. MLBB is not League of Legends or Dota; you don’t need to babysit the marksman. Your job is to roam — it’s in the name.

Mid-game roaming

Roam around the map, check bushes, and help gank enemies. You can stay at a lane if someone is struggling. Usually, gold lane players need the most help, so make sure you periodically gank enemies there. Be ready to punish the enemy gold laners if they overextend and push the minion wave. If you are playing a pure healer, simply being there and healing your teammate is more than enough to discourage any ganks.

End game

Depending on what Roam character you picked, end-game gameplay can be drastically different. If you choose a healer, your job is to stay behind or close to the tank and heal your team. I highly recommend a healer like Floryn or Rafaela, as both have strong crowd control. Estes can also slow down enemies in a pinch, but don’t initiate fights with a healer.

How do you roam in MLBB as a tank? It’s simple, your job is to initiate fights and soak up as much damage as you can. It doesn’t matter if you die, especially if your team can take down multiple enemies in exchange. Tanks like Hylos or Minotaur can initiate fights with their abilities. Franco can grab enemies and bring them to you, an invaluable move if you can land skill shots.

In premade games, my exp friend loves to tank. So I mostly play a tanky Minsitthar as a roam; his strong damage output, combined with his ultimate, makes him a threat even in the late game. As a rule of thumb, pick a safe character when in solo-queue. You can experiment with premade teammates and even roam with Nana.

Late-game roaming

Stick with your team, no matter what. Late game is all about team fights, and a roamer that isn’t supporting their team is useless. You don’t need to clear the exp lane or solo gank enemies, and you certainly don’t need to take down late-game Lord all by yourself. A strong roam is only good if they are healing the team, stunning/slowing enemies, or tanking damage. Stick with the team, give them vision, and bush check.

Conclusion

Roaming in MLBB isn’t hard if you know good placement. Being at the right place at the right time is more than enough for a victory. Your priority is to give vision, gank enemies, and save your teammates from ganks. Junglers will love your early game leashing, mid lane mages will appreciate your bush checks, and gold and exp lane mates will love your ganks. Just don’t pick Hanabi roam in solo-queue, and you’ll do well in MLBB.
