5 young and upcoming players to watch heading into 2026 LCS Lock-In

The LCS Lock-In tournament is almost here. Teams are preparing for a shot to represent North America at the first international event of the year, First Stand. For some of the newer players, this will be the biggest games played so far in their careers. Let’s take a look at these LCS rookie players.

Gryffinn

There’s no better place to start than the kid who has the world at his feet. Gryffinn will no doubt become one of the franchise players in the LCS in the years to come. He’s charismatic, entertaining, and best of all, he loves to talk trash, as evident on the most recent Pros episode. Gryffinn’s story has taken him to many corners of the globe, from learning under the T1 banner, to starting for LOUD in LTA Sul, to now having to fill the shoes of the best jungler the LCS has seen in many years in Inspired. This is a story we will be watching closely.

Zinnie

Being a rookie in League of Legends is a double-edged sword. On one hand, there’s little expectation. They’re young and will develop, and it will take time for them to nurture into the star they are destined to be. On the other side, you have a player like Zinie, a player who was in hot demand across many regions in League of Legends.

Zinie is coming in with the expectation of dominating, as evidenced by his performances in the LCK developmental system. Zinie comes in as the starter for Shopify Rebellion, a team that is now entering into the territory where it must put up numbers. Zinie is aggressive, bold, and will make the game a living nightmare for the enemy mid laner. Zinie has already started a winning career during his time with KT. Now, it’s time to see if he can carry that over to a major region.

Gakgos

Having spent a year under the FlyQuest banner already, it was no surprise to see Gakgos earn his spot on the starting roster. Many have sung the praises of how this kid practises, now it will be interesting to see if he can have a consistent year in a Tier One region. We saw highs and lows from the rookie whenever he subbed in for FlyQuest. Now he’ll be starting, with the expectation of kicking on and developing into the player that FLY clearly believes he will become. With a year of learning at the feet of Bwipo, if he’s even half the player, FLY will have a serious talent on its hands.

Cryogen

Rounding out the FlyQuest squad is Cryogen, another unknown commodity that FlyQuest believes will be a major player for the team in the years to come. Many may not know that Cryogen was briefly amongst the many players competing for FLY NXZT as a sub. Two years later, he is starting for the organization that has dominated North America for the better part of two years. There isn’t much we know of Cryogen yet, but he has clearly impressed the management at FLY enough to immediately come into the starting lineup, a rarity for a player at his age.

HamBak

Although he’s the oldest player on this list at 23, there is still room to improve for HamBak. The Korean jungler is joining the newly assembled Sentinels squad, hoping to make a splash in its LCS debut at the Lock-In tournament. HamBak is an aggressive jungler, and could start hot if players aren’t ready for him. HamBak has Tier One experience, having played on the OK Brion roster in the LCK last year. The bright lights shouldn’t faze him as much as the other players. Nevertheless, he’s still a young player, and it will take him some time to adapt to North America.

When does the 2026 LCS Lock-In start?

Fans will get to see the 2026 LCS Rookies in action on January 24. There are some exciting matches fresh out the gate, with LCS powerhouses Cloud9 and Team Liquid facing off. Meanwhile, FLY has a date with Shopify Rebellion.

Conclusion

Overall, this is an exciting year to be a fan of the LCS, with many new faces getting opportunities that have eluded them in the past. Props to FlyQuest for taking a chance on this project, rather than looking to splash the cash to remain a championship contender. It firmly believes this project will be worth its weight in gold, and it will be interesting to see whether the players can repay the organization with championships in the future.

FAQs

What is considered a rookie in the LCS?

While players may be considered young talent, not all young players can be regarded as rookies. There is a limited number of games they can play to be eligible for the Rookie of the Year award.

Why are rookies important for the LCS?

Rookies are important for the sustainability of the league and North America as a whole. Without a new crop of young players coming in from the developmental system, the region will slowly die out. It’s also about building new brands with fresh faces that fans can connect with and watch their journey unfold.

How do LCS rookies get selected?

For a young player to be noticed and “selected”, they have to put in the hard miles either in the developmental system, such as NACL, or by competing in other leagues, potentially even in their development leagues, such as the ERLs. In-house trials and scouting combines are another way a player can get noticed.
