TL;DR
- BF6 Season 1 Phase 3 Winter Offensive arrives on December 9.
- The new phase brings with it the Ice Lock condition, an ice-climbing axe melee weapon, and an altered Empire State Map.
- Phase 3 adds the least content of all Season 1 phases and looks underweighted.
- Battlefield 6 faces stiff competition, and a lack of new December content may prove to be an issue.
Battlefield 6 Season 1 will unveil its third and final phase, Winter Offensive, on December 9. The aptly named Season 1 phase comes after October’s Rogue Ops and November’s California Resistance, which added further depth to the best Battlefield game yet. But something feels a little different for this phase.
The highlights for Rogue Ops and California Resistance included two new maps, one new mode (plus one limited-time mode), and the well-received RedSec Battle Royale. Additionally, several primary and secondary firearms and attachments, plus a new vehicle. Those provided a good injection of variety, but Winter Offensive seems off-piste.
What is Battlefield 6 Winter Offensive?

The third phase of BF6 Season 1, Winter Offensive, will continue to focus on North America. Per the BF6 Season 1 roadmap, players can expect a limited-time event, named Ice Lock, and an ice climbing axe, a new melee weapon. Yet the roadmap also shows “Ice Lock Empire State” as a limited-time event map, so Ice Lock is really just that map without Portal.
Unless anything changes and BF6 devs decide to add a Wintry treat, that’s the entirety of new content coming. It’s not much at all, and, while not every month can have a ton of new content, it really doesn’t feel strong enough. New cosmetics will arrive, yes, and Winter Offensive assets will be made available for Portal creations, but it feels underweighted.
Realistically, this lack of heft was when we first saw the S1 roadmap. However, when that roadmap was made public, there was no mention of RedSec. The Battle Royale has since surprised with an unexpected release, but like California Resistance, Winter Offensive remains static even as competition has shifted.
Is BF6 Winter Offensive enough?

While Black Ops 7 is now in the wild, one real threat to concurrent players in Battlefield 6 is Arc Raiders. Nobody, not even Arc Raiders developer Embark, could have expected the success that title has had. But it’s one reason BF6 has dropped from the third most-played game on Steam (near launch) to its current position of eighth.
The other? The buzz of BF6 may have fallen off. Dramatically so, as SteamDB shows the free-to-play Battlefield-like title Delta Force currently has more players. That’s actually surprising, given BF6 is a $70 game with paid battle passes. Battlefield 6 Season 2 may well bring an additional player boost. But BF6 needs a solid Season 1, Phase 3 right now.
Sadly, Winter Offensive doesn’t look solid at all. Winter or snowy maps and conditions can be fun, and whatever Ice Lock brings to Battlefield may be superb. But essentially, EA and the devs are depending on that, and a seasonal influx of players who finally have more time to game. It’s not enough. Winter Offensive doesn’t feel fully fleshed out; it looks flimsy.
What Winter Offensive needs

Essentially, I’d suggest what Winter Offensive really needs (or needed as it seems too late now) is an extra map to arrive with it. Or perhaps at least two officially supported Ice Lock maps: why not Empire State and Manhattan Bridge? Even Tajikistan’s Liberation Peak or Mirak Valley. Doubling down on the icy theme would feel like a proper content commitment.
Instead, in a market where Arc Raiders is surging and Delta Force is fighting for position, BF6 feels like it needs another RedSec moment in December. Something to really get players excited and into the game. RedSec is already with us, and that’s great. But the BR buzz has died a little, and that won’t help Winter Offensive. But it could with a festive dusting.
I’m not talking about some silly cosmetic-laden festive Battle Royale nonsense. But winter on the Battle Royale map, maybe? Even, perhaps, the addition of snow machines as vehicles. None of this will happen, but RedSec could really be used for extending Seasonal or Phase focuses. As it is, it won’t help excite more players when it really feels like it should.
As with Winter Offensive itself, I’ll say again it’s just not enough. Not for where BF6 is in the market, nor the dropping player counts. I fully understand that roadmaps can be hard to change, and any changes need resources. But BF6 may soon live below 200,000 peak concurrent players on Steam. Then December’s Phase 3 may seem an opportunity missed.
Conclusion
Battlefield 6 Season 1 Phase 3, Winter Offensive, arrives on December 9. It will bring new content, but not much compared to previous phases in Season 1. And without the support of new additions to the RedSec Battle Royale, Season 1 may end on a low note, despite a new map condition and a tweaked Empire State map.
Given Battlefield 6’s current position, player counts, and its competition, the situation for BF6 doesn’t seem great. Fans have been calling for larger maps, but Phase 3 will add none, and it remains to be seen whether the Holidays will provide a welcome boost to the triple-A title as gamers catch up on the new content added since launch.
