GeoGuessr withdraws from Esports World Cup after community backlash

GeoGuessr has withdrawn from the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, following community backlash.

The news comes just one week after the popular Geography game announced they would be joining the Esports World Cup.

It was met with backlash among the GeoGuessr community. A group of map creators pulled their contributions from the game to protest its participation.

BREAKING NOW: “all major world maps” on the game @geoguessr have been privated in protest of their decision to participate in Riyadh’s Esports World Cup.

CyberShowdown success: How a group of students put together and funded a live esports event at the University of Chichester

CyberShowdown took place on May 15th 2025 in the University of Chichester’s Bognor Regis campus, sponsored by NSE, Gamer vs Depression and ODD Trinket.

This Valorant showdown saw university teams across the Southeast of England come together to compete for a £300 prize pool, with rosters from Portsmouth, Winchester, Sussex, Chichester and Southampton representing their universities. The event was organised by esports students in collaboration with sports media students at the University of Chichester, combining expertise in esports plus cameras and lighting to deliver a a live esports event experience.

An ongoing dispute between Apple and Epic Games resulted in Fortnite being removed from the App Store for over five years, but this week the game finally makes its return.

Fortnite and Apple have been doing battle in court since 2020 which initially made the IOS version unavailable worldwide.

ALGS Midseason Playoffs to be staged at the Esports World Cup 2025

Electronic Arts has confirmed that the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) Midseason Playoffs will take place at the Esports World Cup 2025.

The tournament in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marks the first time that the ALGS circuit will host an event in the Middle East.

It coincides with the news that the FC Pro World Championship will also take place at the Esports World Cup.

Forty teams from across the world will compete for a share of the $2m (£1.5m) prize pool on offer.

British esports host Frankie Ward will once again be part of the hosting team for next month’s PC Gaming Show.

The charismatic esports host and interviewer will join presenter and actor Mica Burton and host and game developer Sean ‘Day[9]’ Plott to present the event.

Ward said: “This year I’m back to host both the pre-show and our custom PC build during the main event.

“Will everything go to plan or will we end up with thermal paste all over the place and a bricked motherboard.

VALORANT has picked up its first Sports Emmy, with the popular first-person shooter game taking home the award for ‘Outstanding Esports Championship Coverage’.

While it is the first Sports Emmy to be awarded to VALORANT, the 2025 award is Riot Games’ sixth win in the category.

VALORANT takes home first-ever Emmy

The Emmy for covering an Esports Championship event was for the VALORANT Champions 2024 Grand Final. The final featured EDward Gaming and Team Heretics, with the former winning in a thrilling match that required all five games.

FC Pro World Championship to be held at the Esports World Cup

FC Pro World Championship to be held at the Esports World Cup

EA Sports has revealed that the Esports World Cup 2025 will host the FC Pro World Championship this summer.

A statement on their website confirmed the tournament would be staged at the event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after it was held in Berlin, Germany last year.

The tournament will see players compete for a share of the $1.5m (£1.1m) prize pool that will be on offer.

A total of 32 players will take part in the tournament – 28 of which have already been decided.

Netflix to make Clash of Clans and Clash Royale animated series

Netflix is to produce an animated series set in the universe of mobile games Clash of Clans and Clash Royale.

The series, currently in pre-production, will bring the game characters and world to life through the animated series.

An announcement trailer was released on game developer Supercell’s official YouTube account, which revealed the show would be based on both titles.

In a post on X, Supercell wrote: “We’re partnering with Netflix to bring the war-waging world of CLASH to life like never before.
